ABOUT THE REPORT

The output data in this report is revenue generated from the direct manufacture of photonic and quantum technologies components, goods and services in Australia and New Zealand. This, the number of employees, salaries, and companies has been supplemented with qualitative information from interviewees working in both countries. These contributors are listed at the end of this report. President of ANZOS, Professor David G Lancaster and Past-President Frédérique Vanholsbeeck, jointly commissioned the report, providing oversight and editorial review.

The data was updated in November 2025 based on the last full fiscal year reported at the time. Revenues from end-market systems or services are not included. A substantial number of new companies have been identified and added since the analysis was last undertaken in 2024 and these account for most of the growth. This is typical in markets where sector surveys are relatively new.

Data analysis was undertaken by Dr. John Lincoln of Harlin Ltd, with the support of the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE). The SPIE survey methodology undergoes continuous process improvements. Accordingly, the Gross Value Added number for 2024 has been restated (as $4.27bn, reported as $5.2bn in 2024). In addition, SPIE is switching to annual global updates. An exchange rate of A$1 = NZ$1.21 was used. An updated methodology was used for apportioning profits where data was missing. A link to this methodology is provided here. https://photonicsuk.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/UK_Photonics_2025_The_Hidden_Economic_Engine_online.pdf
